​In a bright, sunny valley full of green hills and distant, blue-green mountains, lived a cheerful little green snake named Sid. Sid had bright green scales with round yellow-green spots, and a happy smile. He was very good at moving quietly and smoothly across the ground.
​Sid’s favorite place to be was a patch of warm, sandy earth where the morning sun shone brightly. He loved to uncurl, feel the heat, and watch the tiny insects bustle about their day.
​But Sid had a small problem: he was very shy. Whenever another animal came near, he would quickly slither into the tall grass and hide. He was afraid they would be scared of him because he looked so long and different.
​One morning, Sid was enjoying his sunny spot when a little field mouse, named Millie, came running by, looking very upset.
​”Oh dear, oh dear!” squeaked Millie. “I dropped my biggest, sweetest berry! It rolled right into that deep, dark hole in the rock, and I can’t reach it!”
​Millie tried to poke her nose into the hole, but it was too deep and twisted for her small body. She started to cry.
​Sid saw the problem. The mouse couldn’t reach the berry, but Sid had a very long, flexible body that was perfect for reaching into tight spaces.
​Taking a deep breath, Sid slowly and gently uncurled himself. He spoke in his softest voice. “Hello, Millie. Maybe I can help you.”
​Millie stopped crying and looked up, nervous to see the long snake.
​”Don’t be afraid,” said Sid kindly. “My job is to go where others can’t. If you stay right here, I can reach your berry.”
​Very carefully, Sid slid his head toward the rock. He then slowly, smoothly, and precisely stretched his long body into the dark, twisting hole. He moved like a green ribbon, feeling his way until he found the big, sweet berry.
​With a final gentle push, Sid backed out of the hole, holding the berry safely in his mouth. He gently placed the berry on the ground near Millie.
​Millie cheered loudly! “Thank you, Sid! That was amazing! You are so brave and so good at reaching!”
​Sid felt his shyness disappear. He realized that the very thing he worried about—being long and flexible—was his unique talent! He had helped a friend in a way no other animal could.
​From that day on, Sid the Snake was no longer shy. He was proud to be the most flexible and helpful friend on the sunny path.
