In a bright, sandy desert where the sun always shone, lived a cheerful meerkat named Monty. Monty had soft, orange-yellow fur, a long, thin tail, and very large, curious eyes. He was famous in the desert for being the very best lookout because he could stand perfectly still on his hind legs for a long time.
Every morning, Monty would stand on a small sand dune, put his paws together, and look out over the desert to make sure all his friends were safe.
One day, while Monty was on his “Golden Watch,” he saw something moving near a prickly green cactus. It was a tiny desert butterfly with tired wings. The butterfly was struggling to find a cool place to rest because the sand was getting very hot.
”Don’t worry, little one!” Monty called out.
Monty knew that his shadow was long and cool. He didn’t run away; instead, he stood even taller and straighter. He stayed perfectly still, acting like a living umbrella.
The tiny butterfly flew over and rested in the cool shade created by Monty’s tall body. Monty stood there patiently, watching the clouds and the distant mountains, until the butterfly was strong enough to fly again.
”Thank you, Monty!” the butterfly chirped. “You are not just a lookout; you are a kind protector.”
Monty smiled his sweet smile. He realized that standing tall was not just about watching for danger; it was also about being a steady friend for those who needed a little help. Monty the Meerkat stood proud in his desert home, happy to be the kindest watchman in the sands.
