On a sunny beach with golden sand and tall palm trees, lived a cheerful red crab named Clarence. Clarence loved the beach more than anything. He loved to scuttle sideways, leaving tiny tracks in the sand, and he loved to hide in the warm tide pools.
Clarence had a special talent: he was a collector. His claws were perfect for picking up the most interesting things he found on the shore. He had a collection of smooth, gray stones, some shiny pebbles, and a few pieces of ocean glass. He kept his treasures in a small cave under a big rock.
One morning, as he was scuttling along the water’s edge, he noticed something he had never seen before. It was a beautiful, pearly-white seashell. It was a little bigger than his claw, and it had a special shape. He carefully picked it up and held it close to his ear.
”It’s singing!” he gasped. The shell wasn’t really singing, of course, but Clarence could hear the soft sound of the ocean inside it, a gentle hum like a lullaby. He thought it was the most beautiful sound in the world.
He quickly scuttled back to his cave to show his new treasure to his friend, a little blue fish named Fin. Fin lived in a tide pool nearby.
”Listen to this, Fin!” said Clarence, holding the shell up.
Fin listened carefully. “Wow,” he said, “it sounds like the whole ocean is in there!”
Clarence was so happy with his singing shell that he wanted to share its song with everyone. He went all over the beach, holding the shell to the ears of the other crabs, the curious seagulls, and even a slow-moving sea turtle.
Everyone loved the sound. The seagull said it sounded like a quiet memory of the sea. The sea turtle said it reminded him of his home far away.
Clarence realized that his new treasure wasn’t just a shell; it was a way to share the peaceful beauty of the ocean with all his friends. He placed the shell in the most special spot in his collection, right in the center.
From that day on, Clarence wasn’t just a collector; he was a keeper of the sea’s song. And he knew that the best treasures aren’t the ones you keep to yourself, but the ones you can share with the friends you love.
