In a wide, green field where a gentle river flowed, lived a big, happy hippopotamus named Horace. Horace was a beautiful blue-green color, and his favorite thing was to sit quietly in the shallow water, enjoying the cool river mud. He loved to watch the clouds drift by in the bright blue sky.
Horace was known for being the calmest animal in the whole area. Nothing seemed to bother him.
One sunny morning, Horace was enjoying his favorite sunny spot on a small patch of land in the middle of the river. Suddenly, a group of busy little turtles came swimming by. They looked very tired.
”Hello, Horace,” puffed the biggest turtle, whose name was Terry. “We are trying to get to the Great Lily Pad Festival on the other side of the river, but the water is too deep for our slow little legs! We can’t find a place to rest.”
Horace looked at the tired turtles. He knew they couldn’t swim all the way without a break.
Horace had a kind smile. “Don’t worry,” he said. “I can help you!”
He gently lowered himself fully into the water, making sure his broad, flat back was just above the surface. “Climb aboard, friends!” he chuckled.
The little turtles, very carefully, climbed onto Horace’s huge, comfortable back. They sat there happily, using Horace like a big, living raft.
Horace slowly and carefully walked through the deeper parts of the river. He was very gentle so the turtles wouldn’t slide off his back. He didn’t mind carrying them; he enjoyed feeling the sun on his back and hearing the turtles happily chattering.
Finally, they reached the other side of the river, right near the beautiful lily pads!
The turtles slid off and cheered loudly for Horace. “Thank you, Horace!” they cried. “You carried us all the way! You saved the Great Lily Pad Festival!”
Horace smiled, a warm feeling spreading through him. He waved his big ear and then turned to walk back to his sunny spot. Horace, the calmest hippo, learned that day that his great size and strength weren’t just for cooling off in the mud; they were a wonderful gift he could use to help all his small friends in the river.
