In a forest nestled between two mountains, sitting on a sturdy oak branch, lived a wise-looking owl named Oliver. Oliver had big, round eyes and a coat of soft gray and white feathers. Unlike most owls who slept all day, Oliver was a day owl! He loved the sunshine, the sound of the singing birds, and the bright colors of the flowers.
But the other animals didn’t understand Oliver.
”Hoo-hoo! Why are you awake, Oliver?” asked a sleepy squirrel one afternoon. “Owls are supposed to sleep now!”
”I love watching the sun,” Oliver hooted happily. “It’s so bright!”
Oliver’s favorite thing to do was watch the small creatures play. He would sit very still, his big eyes seeing everything, but he was always quiet. This made some of the animals think he was grumpy or bored.
One morning, a group of mischievous little monkeys were playing near Oliver’s branch. One of them, a very fast monkey named Zip, accidentally threw his favorite yellow ball, and it landed right in the middle of a very thorny, deep bush.
Zip and his friends tried to reach it, but the thorns were too sharp. They started to cry.
Oliver watched them quietly. He knew he couldn’t fly into the thorns, but he could see something the monkeys couldn’t.
”Hoo-hoo! Little ones,” Oliver called out softly. “Stop crying. Look closely at the ground, just to the left of the bush.”
The monkeys looked. “We don’t see anything, Oliver,” said Zip sadly.
”Look for the long, thin stick near the rock,” Oliver instructed. “It will be a perfect tool.”
The monkeys finally saw the stick! They used it to carefully push the thorny branches apart and then gently pull the yellow ball out. They cheered with happiness.
Zip ran to Oliver’s branch. “Thank you, Oliver! How did you know the stick was there?
Oliver blinked his big eyes. “My friends, even though I sit still, I see everything. I see the solutions to problems before the problems even begin!”
From that day on, the animals realized that Oliver wasn’t grumpy; he was wise. They stopped worrying about why he stayed awake during the day. They knew that Oliver’s unique way of seeing the world made him the best helper in the forest. And Oliver, the day-loving owl, was happy to finally be understood and appreciated for his great wisdom.
