High up in the blue mountains, near a sparkling river that flowed through the green valley, lived a big, brown bear named Barney. Barney was very large, with thick brown fur and a light-colored belly. He loved to stand on the riverbank with his hands on his hips, looking very brave and proud.
Even though Barney looked like a tough protector, he had a very soft heart. He loved the flowers and the small animals that lived near his river home.
One afternoon, a group of young rabbits were playing near the water’s edge. Suddenly, a very strong wind blew a beautiful, colorful kite right into the middle of the deep river! The rabbits cried out in sadness. They were too small to swim into the fast water to get their favorite toy back.
Barney heard their cries. He stood up tall on his strong legs and put his hands on his hips. “Don’t worry, little friends!” Barney deep voice boomed kindly. “I am big, and I am strong. I can help you!”
Barney stepped carefully into the cool blue water. The water was deep, but Barney was much taller! He reached out with his big paw and gently caught the string of the kite just before it floated away.
He walked back to the shore and handed the kite to the happy rabbits. They danced around his big feet, cheering for their hero.
”Thank you, Barney!” the rabbits shouted. “You are the bravest bear in the whole valley!”
Barney smiled a big, happy smile. He realized that being big and strong was a wonderful thing because it meant he could stand tall and protect his smaller friends. From that day on, Barney the Bear was known as the Guardian of the Riverbank, always standing ready to help anyone in need.
