In a bright valley where a sparkling blue river flowed past tall green trees, lived a friendly hippo named Hugo. Hugo had smooth, teal-colored skin, tiny ears, and very kind eyes. He spent most of his days standing happily in the shallow water, looking up at the fluffy white clouds in the sky.
Hugo was very big, and sometimes he wished he could be small and light like the dragonflies that zipped over the water. “Everything I do is big and loud,” Hugo thought with a sigh. “I wish I could do something gentle.”
One afternoon, Hugo noticed a family of tiny forest mice trying to cross the river. They had a small raft made of leaves, but the water was moving too fast today. The little mice were scared! Their raft was spinning in circles near some sharp rocks.
”Help! We can’t reach the other side!” squeaked the tiniest mouse.
Hugo knew he had to help. He didn’t run or jump; instead, he walked slowly and carefully into the deeper water. Because he was so big and strong, the fast water didn’t move him at all.
Hugo stood perfectly still right in the middle of the river, acting like a giant, sturdy wall. His big body blocked the fast current, making the water behind him very calm and quiet.
”Come now, little friends!” Hugo called out kindly. “Sail your raft behind me. It is safe now.”
The mice steered their leaf raft into the calm water Hugo created. They sailed easily to the other side of the river, landing safely on the soft grass.
”Thank you, Hugo!” the mice cheered, waving their tiny paws. “Your big size saved us! You are the strongest and gentlest friend in the valley.”
Hugo smiled, his heart feeling very light. He realized that being big and strong was a wonderful gift. He didn’t need to be small to be gentle; he used his strength to create a safe place for others. Hugo the Hippo stood by his river, proud to be the valley’s big, kind protector.
