In a lively jungle filled with big green trees and colorful flowers, lived a chameleon named Leo. Leo was a very talented chameleon. He could change his skin to match anything he saw! If he sat on a bright red flower, he would turn red. If he climbed up a brown branch, he would turn brown.
But Leo had a problem. He was so good at changing colors that he couldn’t decide which one he liked best. Every morning, he would wake up and start his day as green as a leaf, but as soon as he saw a beautiful yellow bird, he would turn yellow. Then he would see a purple orchid and quickly change his mind. “I can’t decide!” he would sigh, his skin a patchwork of mismatched colors.
One afternoon, a wise old owl with very big eyes watched him from a high branch. “Leo,” the owl hooted softly, “why do you change so much?”
Leo looked at his own mixed-up colors. “I want to be the most beautiful color in the jungle, but I don’t know which one it is!” he said sadly.
The owl hooted again. “The most beautiful color,” she said, “is the one that makes you happy.”
Leo thought about this. He didn’t feel happy when he was a mix of colors. He felt confused. He looked around him. He saw the big, green leaves, the strong, brown tree trunk, and the clear blue sky. He thought about how much he loved his home.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He imagined the feeling of the soft green grass under his feet and the cool shade of the leaves above him. When he opened his eyes, he was a beautiful, calm green color, the same as the leaves he loved so much.
Leo smiled. He knew then that he didn’t have to be the brightest or most special color. He just had to be himself. And for Leo, his most beautiful color was green. From that day on, he was a happy chameleon who loved being himself.
